*Don’t Carry Cigarettes With You- Ok, so it sounds obvious but you can’t have a cigarette if you don’t have them with you.
*Change Your Routine- Often the urge to light up is triggered by a certain event in your routine. If you change your routine and avoid situations that cause you to light up, you’ll decrease the urge. For example, if you always have a cigarette with your morning coffee, then either give up the coffee (yes I know, harder said than done) or change the location.
*Take It One Day at a Time- Just concentrate on getting through the current day, focusing on the NOW makes the task seem less stressful. Baby steps baby steps.
*Praise Yourself For Everyday Without Smoking- Positive Re-inforcement works well and builds up your self esteem. You’ll make yourself proud to have given up.

I will put a website in my Source that tells you information about what smoking does to babies. I really hope it helps, for the sake of you AND your baby’s health! Good luck! :)

I quit smoking as soon as I found out I was pregnant because I cared more about my baby then I did my stupid addiction. Please think of your baby before yourself. I smoked for 10 years and I got cancer. I am a cancer survivor. Don’t you want to live as long as you can for the sake of your baby. Not to mention smoking can cause your baby a lot of problems. Just throw the pack away and don’t buy anymore. When you have a craving think of the baby.

Just stop. Focus on your baby being healthy not you being cranky or edgy. Every time you want a cigarette, do somehting with yourself. Make something for the baby, read pregnancy books, eat some veggies, whatever it takes. Just stop. It’s really not about you anymore.

    just think about your baby

uhhh…think about your innocent child coming out with a terrible birth defect because of your inability to stop a habit when you’re a grown adult?

Talk to your doctor about it. There may be something that they can do to take the edge off of your cravings for you. Other than that it comes down to will power. Take it hour to hour and day to day. You can do this. I quit several years ago and one thing that helped me (don’t ask why) was drinking a hot and spicy V8 every time I wanted a cigarette. It may not work for everyone, but the spiciness took off some of the edge. Plus, I think it helped me replace that mental dependence on something unhealthy with something very healthy. Good luck!

Cut back first. Don’t go cold turkey. I cut back and I had 3 healthy babies. Dr’s orders.

give her a break, some of you are real jerks. i know it’s hard to quit, i quit when 2 weeks after i found out i was pregnant w/ my second. it was so hard, but everytime i felt that urge i thought of my baby. and it stopped me. i still think about it everyday, sometimes if i’m lucky every other day. im now 32 weeks and i have not had a cig. in so so long. take each day slowly and praise yourself. 8 more weeks to go until i get my baby, and a good ol’ ciggeratte! so cut her some slack people, unless you are a smoker, don’t give her ****. you don’t know what it’s like or what it feels like. thnx. judgemental bastards.

you just DO. you need to quit for the health of your child. that should be enough motivation.

chew gum, don’t hang out with smokers, don’t do anything where you’d be wanting a cigarette, etc.

The first poster has really good advice. The thing that worked for me was researching all the bad things it could do to the baby. Every time I thought about going ahead and smoking one, guilt would plague me and I couldn’t do it. I have been 35 weeks without, and I’m never going back. It can be done!!!! Good luck.

The first comment posted was great advice and provided some really good things to help you quit. And I especially liked MDL’s comment. The simple phrase “It can be done” just really stuck with me. I too am pregnant (13wks) and plan to quit on Monday Aug 4th. I’m nervous but have got to do this for myself, my unborn child and my 14 month old! I’m already 34 yr old and want to be around for a long long time!
